American Legion/Avue Launch Jobs Web Site for Veterans
Site Promotes “More Jobs, Better Jobs”
Washington, DC (November 27, 2007) - The American Legion and Avue Technologies have launched a joint Web site, www.vetjobs.us , to substantially increase employment opportunities in the federal government for America’s returning veterans. The American Legion is the nation’s largest veterans service organization, and Avue is the leading private-sector provider of human capital management services for federal agencies.
The new site will be free to all users and will not contain advertising of any kind. In announcing the site, the Legion and Avue emphasized that the traditional focus of federal agencies on placement numbers, without regard to the long-term quality of the job opportunity, has resulted in inferior job placement and career tracks for many veterans.
For example, while veterans have represented between 30 to 37 percent of new federal government hires during the past five years, only 14 percent and 26 percent of them, respectively, are placed in the two highest-paid labor categories.
The fact that veterans disproportionately take entry-level jobs for low wages, despite high qualifications, often means they will spend their entire career economically disadvantaged.
“We view quality civilian job opportunities and career growth to be perhaps the most critical issue that faces the more than 250,000 veterans exiting the military each year, and we are very enthusiastic to offer a solution that we believe will result in not only more jobs, but better jobs for veterans,” said Marty Conatser, national commander of The American Legion.
“Avue is the perfect partner for this project because Avue is not only the leading technology platform for information and outreach on federal jobs, it is also committed to supporting veterans, and its system is the only one that automatically ensures veterans preference is correctly applied in every hiring action,” Conatser explained.
“We are pleased to be able to join with The American Legion to ensure that veterans receive the very best in information and advice to maximize long-term career growth, identify local opportunities, improve compensation, and help ease the transition from military to federal civil government employment,” said Linda Brooks Rix, Co-CEO of Avue.
The new joint American Legion/Avue program can be visited on the Web at www.vetjobs.us The Web site is expected to be one of many future partnering efforts on behalf of veterans between Avue and The American Legion.

Value of membership
Good day to all. I am the County Commander of a small county in central New York. 2 weeks ago I had the honor of meeting the National Commander of the American Legion. His message was a very simple one. it is not the cost of your membership, it is the value of your membership. I urge all that read this to join your local American Legion,if you are a current member please pay your dues if you have not done so at this time. We need to work harded than ever to help our fellow veterans. Please keep in mind that if we do not help each other no one will. I urge all of you to get active in your local Post. Anything you can contribute is a huge help to the cause of helping fellow Veterans. My local post is a small one, we have approx 400 members total, that includes Ladies Aux and SAL. Yet we donated well over $10,000 to our local community last year. This year we know it will be more. The programs are great, but we need to get the word out on how great they are.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Marion, N.C. Post 56
Hello, my name is Alan Mainer. I am the current Commander of our local Post 56 of the American Legion. I am accredited by the American Legion and the NCDVA (North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs) as a County Veterans Services Officer here in McDowell County. Our Post meetings are on the 4th Tuesday of each month starting at 7:00 PM and held at the N.C. National Guard Amory on Spaulding Road. We extend an invitation to any veterans who are qualified to come to our meetings and if you see something you like about what we do, join our organization to help other veterans to obtain benefits, assistance and sponsorship via The American Legion and the VBA's claims process. Whether you want to be an active member with the Post or if you just want your voice heard in Washington, D.C., we need the numbers to pass legislation in Congress. The more members we have, the louder our voice. Come visit, join if you will, and help others do what others have done for you. Let's keep the Post alive by bringing in some of our younger American soldiers returning from Iraq and Afganistan into the legion. Let's keep our veterans safe and protected by letting our voices be heard.
I also have an organization called Honor Vets Flight. Check out the website at:

Travis Post 76 of The American Legion in the Tenth District of the Third Division of the Department of Texas was formed by Veterans of the First World War in 1919 and has been located in an historic old Post Home in Austin, Texas since 1924. The Texas Merci Boxcar is located on the Post grounds next to the home.
On the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. a joint dinner meeting is held with Auxiliary Unit 76. Cocktail Hour starts at 6:30 p.m. Covered dishes such as vegetables, casseroles, and desserts are brought in by various Ladies of the Auxiliary and some of the more talented Legionnaires. We are fortunate to have good cooks in our midst. After the dinner there is a guest speaker.
On Veterans Day November 11th the Post has a 7:00 a.m. "Past Officers” Breakfast. After the breakfast the members go to the Congress Avenue Bridge to line up for the Veterans Day Parade. There are many Veterans’ organizations from the Austin and Central Texas area there along with a number of Scouting organizations and it is quite an impressive sight. The parade arrives at the State Capitol where the Veterans Day activities include speeches by local dignitaries, the laying of Wreaths.
Travis Post 76 sponsors delegates to the American Legion Boys State, the American Legion Oratorical Contest, Boy Scout Troop No.415, and a number of teams in American Legion Baseball. Every year the Post recognizes the Policeman, Fireman, EMS and Sheriff's Officer of the Year. An award is given every year for Scholarship and Military Excellence to outstanding ROTC cadets at local universities. Travis Unit 76 of the American Legion Auxiliary sponsors delegates to the Texas Bluebonnet Girls State. Some of the delegates sponsored by our Post and Auxiliary have gone on to be the Texas delegates to Boys Nation and Girls Nation in Washington D.C. More information about current and past activities at Post 76 can be found on the Post website.
