Military records/medals
Submitted by mountain8 on 12 December 2009 - 5:25pm.
I'm trying to find out what medals were awarded to me, or rather that I qualify for, after my discharge. Does anyone know of a site where I can see all the medals and read who qualifies for it (what it was awarded for) and learn the dates involved?

Replacement of Military Medals and Awards
Requests for the issuance or replacement of military service medals, decorations, and awards should be directed to the specific branch of the military in which the veteran served. More information can be found at Archives.gov:

Military Personnel Records
All the medals that were awarded to you should be on your DD 214.
Sometimes you may qualify for medals that are not on your DD 214, such as a unit medal, or campaign medal, or personal medal that was authorized after you left the military. If that is the case, you could go back to your unit personnel officer and see if they have a copy, you could contact old comrades to see if they have copies of unit orders, or you could look up the history of the unit to see if it was awarded a unit medal, or if it participated in a conflict that authorized participants a campaign medal. There are so many services and units, I don't know of one website that would cover everything. I'd start with your military service and go to http://www.navy.mil/ and http://www.mrfa.org/unitnavy.htm
If you don't have a copy of your DD 214, you can get a copy from the National Personnel Records Center, Military Personnel Records (NPRC-MPR). The NPRC-MPR is the Federal repository of millions of military personnel, health, and medical records of discharged and deceased veterans of all services during the 20th century. (Records prior to WWI are in Washington, DC.) NPRC (MPR) also stores medical treatment records of retirees from all services, as well as records for dependent and other persons treated at naval medical facilities. Information from the records is made available upon written request (with signature and date) to the extent allowed by law.
