Bell County starts tracking military domestic abuse
By Ivonne Snavely
KILLEEN- Bell County saw 3,172 reported incidents of domestic violence last year. The County District Attorney's Office hopes to put an end to the abuse.
Starting Jan. 1, the Bell County Attorney's Office will start keeping track of domestic violence against women by city and whether the offender is a military personnel or a civilian.
"We want something to measure against so we can see our progress," County Attorney Richard Miller said. "It'll help us identify who we are dealing with. Sometimes the Army wants to do educational stuff and things like that so we will have statistics to do that."
Miller said this type of tracking is long overdue.
"It's just something we should know. Domestic violence is a problem in our various communities, and it's incumbent upon me or any other prosecutor agency to try and end this."
Miller also said he thinks there may be more assaults coming from Killeen, Copperas Cove and Harker Heights where there are more military.
Last year alone, Killeen saw more than two-thirds of the county's domestic violence cases. The city has about half of the county's population.
Bell County is in the process of getting a $60,000 federal grant distributed by the Violence Against Women Act to purchase recorders and cameras. Police officers would use them to capture what they see upon arriving to the scene of a domestic violence call.
If it receives the grant, Bell County will have to submit progress reports to the government. The new tracking effort will help with those reports.
The grant will be awarded the spring.
The findings on domestic violence will not be available until a year from now.

Apparently not only is it seemingly perfectly okay to batter men (if they've been looking at or talking to another woman a la Chris Brown, Tiger Woods, etc), I guess the Bell County Law Enforcement people are unconcerned about the men battered in their county (this is Fort Hood, one of the largest Army bases in the country, for the rest of us).
I try to avoid raising this issue here, unless ie except when it directly involves military issues or servicemen. Read the comments to the article, 3 of those commenters are veterans.
