Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated.

Lowe's, Home Depot offer Vets Discounts

Lowe's and Home Depot are once again offering a 10 percent discount on purchases for those in the military community in honor of Veterans Day.
The Lowe's offer applies to purchases up to $5,000, for all active, reserve and retired military members and their immediate families, according to the company's Web site. Their discount is offered through Monday, Nov. 12. The maximum discount would be $500 on a $5,000 purchase. To qualify, you must show a valid military ID card.
The offer doesn't apply to Maytag Neptune laundry products, Maytag Ice20 refrigerators, Fisher & Paykel appliances, Dyson vacuums, John Deere products or Krups small appliances.
The Home Depot offer is available for active-duty members, reserve, veterans and their families through Wednesday, Nov. 14. Coupons can be found in military publications, including the Nov. 12 editions of Army Times, Air Force Times, Marine Corps Times and Navy Times, which were published the week of Nov. 5.
With the coupon, Home Depot customers can receive a 10 percent discount off their purchases of up to $2,000. The maximum discount would be $200 on a $2,000 purchase. Limitations are noted in the coupon.

Texarkana's annual Veterans Day Parade will be held on Saturday, 10 November 2007, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The theme this year is "Taking Care of our New Veterans."
From 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., veterans eat for FREE at local McDonald's (those located in Texarkana, TX/AR, Atlanta, TX, and Ashdown, AR). This annual event is courtesy of Tom Sadowski, owner of the local McDonald's, who himself is a veteran.

Golden Corral is conducting its seventh annual Military Appreciation Monday on Nov. 12. On this day, all 485 restaurants will offer a free "thank you" dinner buffet and beverage to any person who has served in the U.S. military.
A new component of this year's event is an essay contest open to anyone who has served or has a parent who has served in the military. Essays of 1,000 words or less should explain why the entrant is proud of their service or that of their parents. Three prizes, starting at $1,000, will be awarded to further the winners' educations.
