Why do you look away?

Why do you look away? I know that the homeless are not pretty to look at, but we are people too. Most of us did not choose to be in this situation. We are here due to no fault of our own.

Why do you look away? Did I some how offend you by being homeless?

Why do you look away? Are you upset that I am unshaven and have on dirty clothes? I did not choose this. It was forced upon me due to the financial situation that I am in. I would prefer to shower, shave and have clean clothes on. But, what money I make must go to food and my daily survival. Unfortunately, razors are a luxury that I can ill afford.

Why do you look away? Did I say something that was offensive to you? I very rarely speak and never do I start a conversation. I keep what thoughts I may have to myself.

Why do you look away? Do you think I am a criminal? I have never been arrested in my life. I have always abided by the laws of this country. I am not a criminal, have never been one and don't intend on becoming one. Unless, of course, being homeless becomes a crime.

Why do you look away? Do you think I do drugs and drink? I do neither of these things. I have never done drugs and have never drank alcohol, the smell alone makes me nauseous. Tho, if I had a drug or alcohol problem, getting help would be a lot easier.

Why do you look away? Are you afraid that you know me? You might, you never know.

Why do you look away? Are you afraid that you might end up out here on the streets with me? There are worse people out there than myself. You might do well to end up next to me. At least you would not have to worry about being safe.

I am a homeless vet in Tallahassee and just wanted to ask these questions. I would like to know the answers. It might amaze you that I am extremely literate and can converse with you on a multitude of subjects.
