World War I

"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it"

WW1 Started on 28 Jun 1914

Cause of WW1: Strong feelings of nationalism throughout Europe prior to The Great War. The spark which ignited the flame happened on June 28, 1914, when Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Serbian student, Gavrilo Princip, while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia.

As a result, Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Germany declared war on Russia (who had allied with Serbia). Two days later, Germany declared war on France and swept its armies through Belgium, violating its neutrality. Because of this, Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland) declared war on Germany. Austro-Hungary declared war on England. And thus started WWI.

The U.S. Congress declared war on Germany on 6 April 1917.

WW1 Ended on 11 Nov 1918 with the Versailles Treaty in Paris.

WW1 lasted 4 years, 3 months and 14 days

Casualties in WW1 were between 10-40 million depending on the source, and if you include military and civilian deaths, and those deaths caused by disease and famine.

cooler heads

The lesson I take from this is cooler heads must always prevail. Too many times we do things because we can, not because we should
